Work items
A work item is one piece of work. It has a title and a body written in markdown, a status, a priority, someone it is assigned to, the iteration it belongs to, an estimate, labels, and any custom fields the project defines. A work item can sit under a parent item, so a large piece of work breaks into smaller ones, and an item can depend on another item.
Description
Moving an item between two neighbours changes only that item, so the rest of the column stays as it was.
Search finds work items across every project you can see. Triage shows the items that need a decision, across those same projects.
